dc.description.abstract The general aims have been met by arranging the material in eight chapters. In the first chapter, the introduction, certain trends in the development of capitalism are traced in terms of the original Marxist predictions, and of the analyses of commentators writing within the last decade. The description and analysis of the Fletcher organisation occupies Chapters Two to Seven inclusive. Chapter Two details the ownership of the company. Chapter Three considers the degree of influence which an organisation such as Fletchers, and the men who run it, might be expected to exercise. Chapter Four examines the part played by Sir James Fletcher, the company's founding father, while Chapter Five relates its history. These elements are considered together to show the close relationship between personality and opportunity. The actual operations of the group are briefly set down in Chapter Six. The relative length of this chapter reflects the wide range of the company's activities. Finally, Chapter Seven refers to certain factors which have been or are of importance in the development of the company. en_NZ
