dc.description.abstract The Story of Hong Kil Dong (Hong Kil Dong Jon) is a landmark in the history of Korean literature. This translation is intended to make the oldest version of the novel available to readers of modern English. Introductions provide historical background on the turbulent period leading to the novel's publication in the early 17th century (European calendar), biographical information on its author, Huh Kyun, and literary background. The translation is taken from the kyung 'pan' bon, the oldest han'gul version. It renders the text directly into modern English, translating freely where no directly equivalent words of phrases exist, and seeking always to present a clear and enjoyable narrative which reads naturally in late 20th century English. Notes provide guidance on aspects of old Korean language, literary convention, culture and society. en_NZ
