dc.description.abstract In the last two decades in New Zealand the State has become the main supplier of electric power in New Zealand, and this thesis traces the genesis of the scheme, the methods by which it has been developed and the results it has so far obtained. The information and data contained herein have been obtained from Departmental reports to Parliament, from the Statutes of New Zealand, from official reports and the Year Books, and from articles contributed in past years to various scientific journals. In each case an endeavour has been made to refer to information actually recorded in the period being described rather than to information chronicled at some later date. Some aspects of the development can be treated only on a technical basis and these have not been touched upon. Such matters involve an understanding of technical details which are perhaps outside the purpose of this work. en_NZ
