dc.description.abstract Purely inorganic derivatives of tervalent iodine, of general formula IX3, are nearly always highly reactive and unstable. Only where X = C1 has the compound (IC13) been fully characterised. The stability of these compounds is enhanced if one or more aromatic radicals are introduced into the molecule thus: RIX2 - iodoso compounds R2IX iodoniun compounds The preparation of a highly reactive and poorly characterised nitrate of tervalent iodine, I (NO3)3, has been reported (1) . One would expect on substitution of an aromatic radical to obtain the simple iodoso derivative, RI(NO3)2 This, in its simplest form (i.e. R = C6H5), has been reported as such by Willgerodt (2) and is referred to in the standard organic chemistry texts(21,22). A recent attempt by Dasent and Waddington (3) to prepare this compound resulted only in the formation of a basic nitrato derivative with an unusual oxygen bridged structure: en_NZ
