dc.description.abstract This thesis examines post-compulsory education and training under the present system of unit standards registered on the National Qualification Framework (NQF). Special attention is given to the training of apprentice Automotive Engineers as an example of the way the system has been implemented. The perceived strengths and weakness of the system are surveyed. Qualitative data was gathered from tape recorded interviews with Tutors, Employers/Managers and Students. The major strength was seen as being a complete syllabus that assured all aspects required in the trade were covered. The major weaknesses are in the administration of the system; workload; problems with assessment and the lack of confidence in system to produce a valid qualification. en_NZ
