dc.description.abstract The Initial objective of this thesis was to study the vibrational spectra of compounds containing the SO3, (sulphite) group, in order to decide whether it would he possible to distinguish in crystals, the free sulphite ion from the various possible forms of a co-ordinated sulphite group. At an early stage in the investigation, it was found that the various reported sulphites of copper themselves constituted a significant field for study, and an investigation of these formed a fairly self-contained part of the work. en_NZ
