dc.description.abstract In recent years, the number of investigations on the subject of halogen addition to ethylenic compounds has increased rapidly. Each of the various factors involved in the study of these reactions (e.g. the influence of solvents or substituent groups etc. 1,2.) has received more specialised attention, and a recent tendency for systematic correlation of results has contributed much to the elucidation of the subject (3). Some of the factors involved in the study are: 1.The influence of the halogen. 2.The influence of the solvent and the presence of water. 3.The kinetics of the reaction. 4.The effect of substituent groups. (Constitutional effects). en_NZ
