dc.description.abstract EARLY WORK ON THE PASSIFLORACEAE. The major early works on the family are listed by Killip (1938), and of these, the most important and most comprehensive was that of Masters in his 'Contribution to the Natural History of the Passifloraceae' (1871), and his monograph on the American species in 'Flora Brasiliensis' (1872). Masters was the recognised authority on the family until he died in 1907. Knowledge of the family was brought up to date in Killip's 'The American Species of the Passifloraceae' (1938), Degener's 'Flora Hawaiiensis' (1940), and Chakravarty's 'A Revision of the Indian Passifloraceae' (1949). Other descriptive works of considerable interest include Pope's 'The Edible Passion Fruits in Hawaii' (1935), Bor and Raizada's 'Some Beautiful Indian Climbers and Shrubs XXVI' (1947), 'Identification of the Cultivated Passion Flowers' (Lawrence 1960), 'Contribution to the Knowledge of the Passifloraceae of Portugese Guiana' (Fernandes and Fernandes 1957), Liebenberg's 'A Revision of the South African Species of Adenia (1939), and entries in Bailey's 'Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture' (1916) and various Floras. en_NZ
