dc.description.abstract A study has been made of the brown alga Adenocystis utricularis (Bory) Skottsberg including, culturing for the Life History, the Anatomy, Ecology and Distribution. A new culture technique using agar and a liquid medium for the culture of germlings is described. The reasons preventing the complete life cycle taking place in culture are discussed. The anatomy and development of the macroscopic thallus of both New Zealand and Tasmanian material is reviewed along with the development of the cryptostomata. The ecology is discussed relating temperature, bright sunshine, and daylength to the periodicity of Adenocystis as seen on the shores at Wellington and Dunedin. The circumpolar distribution and the distribution on New Zealand shores is discussed and summarized in two maps. en_NZ
