dc.description.abstract The sociology of religion as a special area of sociological analysis is enjoying something of a resurgence at the present time. Whether this reflects an increasing sociological interest in the 'ultimate dimension' of social existence, or the morbid curiosity of sociological undertakers waiting to preside at the obsequies of institutionalised religion, is a moot point. Irrespective of motivation, however, the fact is that increasing numbers of sociologists are turning their attention towards the religious institution in an attempt to ascertain its sociological significance. en_NZ
