The Fātele of Tokelau: Approaches to the Study of a Dance in its Social Context

Abstract

The contemporary dance, the fātele, of Tokelau has been studied principally amongst Tokelau communities in New Zealand, but also in Atafu, Tokelau Islands. Insights into the fātele have been obtained by participation in the dance in rehearsals and performances, by recording and analysis, by interviewing, and from the few written sources about Tokelau. In the thesis the elements of music, dance and poetry of the fātele are not treated separately but in the interconnections as they appear significant in Tokelau performances. Connections are also traced from the fātele to aspects and values of the society, and the historic record is examined for evidence of the origin and development of the dance. My intention has been to place on record the details of this traditional activity; to allow for comparisons to be made with other Polynesian forms; to encourage through dialogue the awareness by Tokelauans of their rich heritage; and to pay homage to a vigorous and creative dance and music community.
