dc.description.abstract From historical evidence it is known that the majority of the Wellington Peninsula was forested prior to European occupation; the exceptions were Somes Island, Ward Island, Miramar Peninsula and Te Aro swamp. There is climatic evidence of greater cooling than would be expected towards Cook Strait, so that it could be anticipated that the former forests would reflect this temperature difference. en_NZ
