dc.description.abstract Agriculture by definition comprises several types of activities. Perhaps the definition given by the French Rural Economy Society in December 1949 will serve my purpose. According to the Society agriculture is:- " Work, the purpose of which is to harness the forces of nature in order to produce plants and livestock to meet human needs. In primitive times and long afterwards the mere gathering of wild foods and hunting were merged with agriculture. Nowadays, through the application of various sciences agriculture has all the characteristics of an industry. The essence of farming is that it is systematic cultivation, or at least implies deliberate preparation." en_NZ
