Item Restricted An exploratory study into the need for guidance counsellors in New Zealand intermediate schools(Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, 1994) Weld, Nicola AnneThis research seeks to evaluate the need for Guidance Counsellors in intermediate schools. It sets out to establish the presence or absence of this need through a qualitative data base consisting of predominantly face to face interviews. These involved a range of experts in the area of teaching and agency intervention with 11-13 year olds. The thesis provides a review of the relevant literature in the field along with general background information relating to adolescent development, media perception of early adolescent behaviour and statistical data specific to this age group. The primary tasks of early adolescents (11-13 year olds) were perceived by respondents to include the onset of puberty and identity development. A variety of behaviour problems and difficulties were identified and the current range of interventions related to these are summarised. The need for provision of guidance counselling services at the intermediate school level was determined and recommendations are made for further action.
