Item Restricted Can you taste the difference? Exploring producer experiences of Fairtrade and development in Timor-Leste(Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, 2015) Agassiz, Kelly; Murray, WarwickThe Fairtrade project aims to support producer-directed community development and transform unjust trade relations at both the local and global scale. These transformational ambitions are commonly ascribed to Fairtrade principles yet there are limited studies, based within spaces of production that examine the influence of Fairtrade principles on the daily lives of producers. Thus, questions remain over how the Fairtrade project is realised at the producer level and whether Fairtrade supports transformation or reproduces historically-embedded power asymmetries beneath a veil of benevolence. This thesis addresses this problem through a case study of coffee producers in rural Timor-Leste. To explore the situated understanding, implementation and experience of Fairtrade and development, data was gathered through semi-structured interviews, photovoice and focus groups. Data was transcribed and analysed and the process illuminated a number of themes - good governance, capacity-building, empowerment and representation - in the context of Fairtrades’ absence.Item Restricted Collective Contract Farming in Sarawak, Malaysia: A Study of Patterns of Participation(Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, [2004]) Griffith, Anton; Murray, Warwick; Morrison, PhilipThis case study forms an empirical basis against which to assess the effect of collectively held contracts on participation in contract farming in 'developing' countries. One of the central issues in the distribution of returns to contract farming schemes is the selection practices applied. By contracting larger farmers, purchasing parties can reduce the number they must deal with (and thereby their transaction costs) to procure a given quantity of produce. In the rural periphery this has been associated with income polarisation, raising food prices without raising the incomes of the poor and cutting marginal families out of incomegenerating opportunities. One potential way of addressing this problem is having a number of small farmers grouped together under one contract. This research analyses participation in a State-run outgrower scheme in Sarawak, Malaysia. In Batang Ai, Sarawak, the State has organised a contracting scheme growing fish for urban markets in a hydro-electricity reservoir. With the intention of spreading the benefits of the scheme as widely as possible, participation has largely been through state-funded community-based collectives. However, participation has been neither as wide nor as equitable as intended. Shallow and unstable markets have meant low returns. The selection and funding decisions of authorities, community size, levels of intra-community trust, and the quality of community leadership have contributed to the variability of returns. In consequence, the influence of capacity and motivation of individual households on participation have taken second place to these contextual factors.Item Restricted GEOG 31: Geography: Geographies of Globalisation(Victoria University of Wellington, 2013) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG212: Geography: Worlds of Development(Victoria University of Wellington, 2007) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG212: Geography: Worlds of Development(Victoria University of Wellington, 2005) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG212: Geography: Worlds of Development(Victoria University of Wellington, 2014) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG212: Geography: Worlds of Development(Victoria University of Wellington, 2013) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG212: Geography: Worlds of Development(Victoria University of Wellington, 2010) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG212: Geography: Worlds of Development(Victoria University of Wellington, 2008) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG212: Geography: Worlds of Development(Victoria University of Wellington, 2011) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG212: Geography: Worlds of Development(Victoria University of Wellington, 2012) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG212: Geography: Worlds of Development(Victoria University of Wellington, 2015) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG316: Geography: Geographies of Globalisation(Victoria University of Wellington, 2005) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG316: Geography: Geographies of Globalisation(Victoria University of Wellington, 2017) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG316: Geography: Geographies of Globalisation(Victoria University of Wellington, 2015) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG316: Geography: Geographies of Globalisation(Victoria University of Wellington, 2012) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG316: Geography: Geographies of Globalisation(Victoria University of Wellington, 2008) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG316: Geography: Geographies of Globalisation(Victoria University of Wellington, 2014) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG316: Geography: Geographies of Globalisation(Victoria University of Wellington, 2010) Murray, WarwickItem Restricted GEOG316: Geography: Geographies of Globalisation(Victoria University of Wellington, 2007) Murray, Warwick
