Item Restricted The quality learning circle a tool for the professional development of teachers(Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, 2004) Murphy, Natalie MaryThis study investigated the implementation and outcomes of establishing a Quality Learning Circle (QLC) in a rural primary school. Following a series of workshops conducted over one term on peer assisted learning (PAL) methodologies, the teachers and the principal participated in five fortnightly QLC meetings to support the implementation of PAL within the school. Their perceptions of the effectiveness of the QLC for facilitating the transfer and sustainability of PAL in their classrooms were examined through analysis of interviews, a questionnaire and QLC transcripts. Results showed that on-site and school-wide professional development through the QLC provided teachers with ongoing collegial support for the transfer of course learning to classroom practice. It enabled them to practise PAL within the classroom context, encouraged reflective thinking through narrative and collegial problem-solving and provided them with learning opportunities through classroom visits. The implications for Resource Teachers Learning and Behaviour and other educational personnel seeking to use the QLC as a tool of professional development are discussed. Further research is needed to ascertain if these findings can be replicated in other school settings.
