Item Restricted The biology of the "Magpie moth", Nyctemera Annulata (Bois) (Hypsidae, Lepidoptera)(Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, 1967) McLaughlin, Magretta MA synopsis of the genus Nyctemera is given, with particular emphasis on the New Zealand species Nyctemera annulata. The general biology of this moth is described, with reference to the work of previous authors. Flight and mating behaviour was studied in the field. Main flights occur at sunrise and sunset, and mating in mid-morning. A survey of the larval parasites was made, the only parasites being Microplitis sp. and Ecthromorpha intricatoria. Experimental work done in the laboratory included the effects of temperature and relative humidity on the incubation of eggs and the development of pupae. Extreme temperatures and humidities were not used. Growth studies included head capsule measurements of successive instars, and weight measurements of larvae reared at different temperatures. Several growth curves were constructed. A study of the integumental anatomy of the more important classificatory structures is included.
