In the present thesis, it is proposed to consider some aspects of the origins and consequences of self-awareness especially in relation to psychoneurotic maladjustment in the hope that such consideration may throw some light on the causes of maladjustment and help in the quest for better adjustment. The discussion which follows attempts to elaborate a theory of some aspects of human nature. Any practice of psychotherapy, if based on a tenable theory implies a compatible, although possibly partial, theory of human nature, covering at least the following propositions or beliefs:-
