The Latin America CAPE was established in July 2017 to:
- Prepare New Zealanders to engage with and do business with the countries of Latin America
- Support and develop New Zealanders’ knowledge and understanding of Latin America
- Build New Zealanders’ language competence and intercultural skills
- Excel nationally and internationally in dissemination of knowledge and skills relating to Latin America
Supported by four of New Zealand's leading universities – Victoria University of Wellington, the University of Auckland, the University of Otago and the University of Waikato – the Latin America CAPE will harness academic expertise, evidence-based research, stakeholder know-how and industry acumen to build sustainable commercial and cultural relationships with the region and grow public awareness of the importance of Latin America to New Zealand.
The Centres of Asia-Pacific Excellence (CAPEs), including the Latin America CAPE closed on 31 October 2024.
